Feedback from the judges: Allen Gardens has and continues to be an understated jewel in the City of Toronto’s crown, and this restoration and update of the historic glazed domes and cupolas has been done in a manner that is deserving of this institution. This project has successfully updated the envelope to contemporary energy efficiency standards without losing the historic charm that is as fundamental to the unique and memorable qualities of this institution as the flora that it houses.
Even without the descriptions of such provided by the project brief, most if not all consultants and contractors alike will instinctively sense the daunting challenges that the design, fabrication, logistics and assembly presented to this project team. Therefore, without question, this project is deserving of the 2025 Award for Excellence in Architectural Glass & Metal – Execution category in having successfully faced and met those challenges head-on.
